New Brewery & Restaurant: Mendel Segal Continues Expanding Kosher Cleveland Offerings

As reported by Rabbi Dan Eleff, of dansdeals.com, Mendel Segal, the eponymous owner and “rabbi pitmaster” of Mendel’s KC BBQ (20314 Chagrin Blvd., Shaker Heights, OH, 44122 mendelskcbbq.com, (216)266-0035, certified under Cleveland Kosher) will be taking over Midnight Owl Brewing Co, a craft brewery and restaurant. Mendel told Rabbi Eleff that the new menu will feature “bar bites such as smash burgers, hot pretzels, beer mustard, sandwiches, and tacos.” The current menu features much of the same, with burgers, sandwiches, empanadas, and traditional bar fare.

Segal opened Mendel’s KC BBQ in 2023, followed by Mendel’s Deli & Dogs the same year at Cleveland Guardian home games at Progressive Field (Under supervision of Cleveland Kosher), followed by Fiamma by Mendel (28699 Chagrin Blvd., Beechwood, OH, 44122, (216)342-4244, certified Cholov Yisroel by the Cleveland Vaad Hakashrus) an upscale dairy restaurant. Fiamma features a Fiero Forni wood-burning pizza oven, an imported Italian oven which rotates the pizzas to the dining room side.

As for the new brewery, Segal and manager Shua Lurie are joining the existing business next door to Mendel’s KC BBQ named Midnight Owl Brewing Company at 20312 Chagrin Blvd.

“We will be partnering with the current owners to help them breathe some new life into this fantastic brewpub,” says Lurie. “They are amazing people and we are excited to be working alongside them to offer the Jewish community a new and unique concept.”

Cleveland Kosher will certify the brewery. The brewery will be one of the only of its kind in the kosher world, joining Long Beach Beer Lab (Wrigley/Willow St. location and coffee kiosks are certified via KosherLA). Our friends at Tripping Kosher covered Long Beach Beer Lab here.

Great news for the Cleveland community and the kosher community as a whole. Go Mendel.
