An interesting kashrus saga emerged over the past week with Lighthouse Kosher’s abrupt discontinuation of their certification of Bakey in Boston. The Facebook post by their certifier, Lighthouse Kosher, was somewhat terse:

There’s nothing wrong with an announcement like this, and it’s a pretty common practice to not get into the details when there’s a certification revocation. Rumor on the Internet was that the locations had been serving traife sandwiches. We got more information today.

While I am not necessarily a fan of the community-funded kashrus model in general, I absolutely commend Lighthouse Kosher on being transparent with the community about what happened, and what steps were taken. The kind of situation being described can happen to any kosher certifier, and dealing with it quickly and decisively is what you’d expect. Hopefully Bakey and Lighthouse Kosher can come to a mutual agreement with stronger controls to prevent future issues.
